Singer-Songwriter
Leon John is one of the most exciting new voices in African music today. A true pan-African; the young artist was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in 1995 and came of age in Cairo, Egypt between the ages of 9 to 17 before moving to South Africa to complete his undergraduate and post-graduate education.
With his soulful presence, impactful storytelling, LEON JOHN is inspired by his Karanga and Xhosa roots, a cultural connection that carries through and is enchantingly complemented by his evocative and resonant voice.
Leading from the long legacy established by African musical giants such as Oliver Mtukudzi, Miriam Makeba, Salif Keita, Angelique Kidjo, Thandiswa Mazwai to name a few; LEON JOHN is always reminded and inspired to remain truthful to those foundations in every note and phrase.
A self-taught savant, he learned most of his singing technique from watching, listening and learning from other singers who he admired and drew inspiration from.
